Tetris Couldn't Triumph at The Game Awards — Another Award Type Might Solve This

Whenever a significant awards ceremony approaches, there’s always a clamor for the addition of new categories to recognize unsung work and delight the hearts of enthusiasts with niche passions.

Another commentator previously argued for a horror game category. It would be amazing. The same goes for strategy board titles, this being a passionate advocate's mission. Yet I need to apologize in advance for pushing forward because like all blinkered fanatics, I have a cast-iron argument supporting my request is the most urgent above others. The demand is this: We need a classification for brain-teasing titles.

The Genre Classification Challenge

Categorizing art by genre is not a science; it remains highly personal, and typically generate discussions resulting in unclear classifications. It's understandable that cinema institutions avoid this approach. But it is a necessary evil within the realm of video games, that demonstrate such variety they hardly constitute a single creative category.

To recognize the complete range of interactive entertainment excellence to receive acknowledgment, while allowing diverse titles to compete fairly, classification by type becomes crucial.

Existing Game Classification System

Leading game ceremonies currently feature award types recognizing Action-oriented games, Adventure-action titles, Role-Playing, Combat games, Sim/Strategy, and Sports/Racing games. Between them, these award types effectively encompass a lot of ground, and you can find room for numerous titles.

Not so for logic-based experiences. No suitable classification appears for their placement. Think about these this year’s best games, each quite distinct: the architectural riddles of one title, intense tile-matching from another release, engaging interpersonal challenges from additional release. Which classification works among existing types? Nowhere, that’s where.

Acknowledgment Issues

There are dozens excellent brain-teasers launched regularly lacking appropriate categories at major award shows, unless they happen to qualify for categories like Mobile Game, Virtual reality experiences, and the highly challenging Indie races.

  • A renowned logic title wasn’t nominated in any category during that awards season
  • Another imaginative release was excluded in 2019
  • Well-received sorting experience got ignored in 2021
  • Only a few puzzle games managed to sneak into niche award types

Significance of Puzzle Games

Commonly they're small games, but the art behind logic titles is of massive significance. Famous handheld logic titles stand as the most-played games in the world continuing this trend for an extended period.

The iconic tile-matching title challenges well-known building titles for the title of highest-selling title ever; it’s also in the running for top gaming experience. Puzzle games are foundational within interactive entertainment, and engaging with diverse game types.

Recommendation and Reasoning

Puzzle games wouldn’t have such difficulty. One could readily select a field of five interesting, varied, worthy titles each ceremony simply — or rather, with difficulty, because you’d have to leave so many good games out.

To emphasize again, these represent titles that otherwise have no home during prominent ceremonies. Brain-teaser creators operate at the demanding boundary interactive creation, producing among most fundamental forms of the video game form. Just like film action specialists, they merit acknowledgment. We shouldn't delay generations.
