Super Typhoon Fung-wong Ravages the Philippines: Two Fatalities and Massive Evacuations Reported

The Philippines was severely impacted by Super Typhoon Fung-wong, resulting in a minimum of two fatalities and forced the evacuation of more than 1.4 million individuals.

Authorities reported that the powerful weather system caused widespread flash flooding, storm surges, landslides, and destructive gale-force winds, prompting the evacuation of 1.4 million people nationwide.

Widespread Damage and Emergency Operations

In the town of Pandan, one of the worst-hit regions, disaster response teams documented rising waters reaching the tops of houses and residences washed out by strong flows.

Our team rescued 14 individuals stranded atop a house engulfed in flood in a low-lying neighbourhood,” a disaster-mitigation officer stated. One resident frantically contacted us, reporting his home’s roof was at risk of tearing away due to the storm. We rescued him and four relatives.”

By Monday, authorities confirmed two fatalities: a drowning victim on the island and another who died when her house collapsed in eastern Samar.

Typhoon Strength and Projected Path

The super typhoon was downgraded to a severe tropical storm on Monday morning as it crossed the Philippines’ largest island, home to the national capital.

Per the state weather service, the storm’s sustained wind speed decreased from 185 km/h to 165 km/h, though wind bursts peaked at more than 275 km/h.

The cyclone is expected to continue weakening as it moves north toward Taiwan.

Relief and Assessment

The national disaster response service indicated efforts were ongoing to assess damage to infrastructure and homes.

Roughly thousands of shelters were activated to temporarily house tens of thousands of households.

Recent Context and Climate Impact

The typhoon hit just days after Typhoon Kalmaegi, that claimed hundreds of lives with dozens unaccounted for before moving on to Vietnam, where it killed five.

Search operations for those still missing were halted on Sunday due to safety concerns to emergency personnel.

The climate crisis is causing tropical storms stronger and frequent. Fung-wong is the 21st typhoon to impact the nation this year.

Scientists report that the rate of intense cyclones hitting the Philippines has risen by more than 100% over the last two decades.

Global assessments suggest that severe weather events result in approximately millions in dollars in damage to the country annually.

The Philippine president issued an emergency declaration last week because of the extensive devastation from the prior typhoon and the expected damage from the new storm.
