No fewer than 13 individuals killed and 98 wounded in train crash in the nation of Mexico.

A deadly train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite opposition criticisms regarding the speed and execution of the country's flagship government projects.

The crash happened on the trans-isthmus railway, a line developed to link the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was designed to provide an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring economic development in the area.

“We are going to meticulously determine the reasons behind this accident,” declared the country's president.

The leader confirmed that, of the some 250 passengers on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in critical condition. The president noted plans to visit Oaxaca to confer with those involved.

Flagship Project of Past Leadership

The Interoceanic Train was a central infrastructure project of the previous administration, whose term concluded the prior year. This venture was a hallmark of his government's strategic agenda for the southeastern region.

Another multi-billion dollar train initiative from that time, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the broader strategy to kickstart the economic fortunes of a historically less developed part of the country.

Building Management and Safety Concerns

The building of both train projects was supervised by the nation's military, marking a notable growth of its role in national works. They were executed at an fast-tracked pace, surpassing predictions to be partially inaugurated before the end of that presidency.

However, this accelerated timeline had concurrently sparked ongoing concerns over operational security.

  • Sunday's accident was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
  • This includes an earlier crash this month when a train hit a truck at a railroad crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also seen several non-lethal derailments.

Appeals for Investigation and Halt

In the wake of the disaster, the chief of a key rival party demanded an immediate suspension in the building and running of all such projects.

This stoppage was proposed while awaiting a comprehensive safety audit. The party declared that the tragedy "demands immediate answers."

In response, the head of state insisted that the train had been functioning in full compliance with all security protocols. Assurances were given that the government would remain "accountable" in both the construction and running of these vital projects.
